My husband Bruce was the inspiration for several songs. Love’s A Moving Target started as he passed purposefully through a room on his way to do something. As I watched him, I started to laugh as the thought appeared that “my love is a moving target”. In the recording, Staples’ accordion and Gina Burgess’ violin help tell the somewhat Parisian adventure of what happened when Cupid got fired.

Lyrics

Love’s a Moving Target
by Karen Robinson

Intro:
Why is it when it comes to love I’m having no success?
Cupid seemed incompetent to help me, I confess
It wasn’t me who hired him. Enough’s enough, I fired him
It can’t be all that hard to shoot this darned thing …more or less

(At a) party I soon thought I’d met the one I’d hoped to find
My heart was all a flutter. Romance was on my mind
I drew the bow. I heard a yelp
Cupid you’re supposed to help!
It ricocheted and grazed the guy behind

Grazing has a consequence. That one caused a fling
France was nice (oh la la), but won’t provide offspring
If I launch my arrow faster
Will I vow before the Pastor?
Or maybe hit someone who’ll show me how to shoot this thing?........Oh

Chorus:
Love’s a moving target, You’d swear I’m shooting in the dark
Cupid, won’t you hold him still and help me hit my mark?
Arrow’s ready. Pull the bow
Nice and steady, now let go! (1 bar)
There’s more to this than mama ever told
Its practice, practice, practice, or be single when I’m old

By now I have the best equipment: arrows, quiver, bow
Even bought an upgrade to this year, I’ll have ya know
If courtship is just marksmanship
I’ll practice shooting from the hip
With a programmed tip or heat-seeking arrow

Why I aim for love in vain I simply can’t explain
‘Cause I can split a feather in the teeth of a hurricane
Yes now I hit most anything (Zing!)
With my arrow, stick and string
Still, love’s a moving target. I miss time and again……..Oh

Chorus
Love’s a moving target, You’d swear I’m shooting in the dark
Cupid, won’t you hold him still and help me hit my mark?
Arrow’s ready. Pull the bow
Nice and steady, now let go! Oh!
There’s more to this than mama ever said
Its practice, practice, practice, or be single when I’m dead

Although my concentration’s good, and eyesight isn’t bad
A gentle jarring’s all it takes to throw my aim a tad
Hey! There is no doubt…I felt that nudge
Its clear now…Cupid holds a grudge!
Another graze, another fling…egad!

Outro:
This is getting more intense. I’m feeling it from my sixth sense
I’m pretty sure my chance is near…and Cupids busy over there
Ouch! …. Ouch? Well, what do we have here?

Realization’s dawning. I can feel a growing thrill
Planted there in my behind - a perfect, heart-tipped quill
After all that I’ve been through
His heart was true, his aim was too

He’d have hit me sooner if only I’d stood still
He said he’d have hit me sooner if only I’d stood still
