Whispers
By Karen Robinson

Under low branches, his arms wrapped around her, where the river touches the shore
The whisper of dusk as the mist hovers low. Night’s been down a few minutes or more.

The whisper of night breezes fan the pine branches, calm and comfort the deepening sky.
Together they’d sit to watch the night fall where the water whispers by.

And the whisper of love’s soft pledge from the waterside rises up and away.
It rises up and away… rises up and away
oooo oo oooo oo

The morning rays seep through the lake’s misty covering. The air is quiet today.
She pauses from tending the garden to listen. Water’s darker since he went away.
The garden they planted in spring has plenty to last if it feeds only one.
There’s a whisper of wings as the owls sweep the lake and fly up to their nest in the sun.

And her whisper of love’s soft pledge from the waterside rises up and away.
It rises up and away… rises up and away

Some choose a mate for a lifetime. Sometimes a lifetime flies by
When something happens that tears earth from sky. Someone is left wondering why.
She’s left alone wondering why.
Don’t Ask, Don’t ask. No one knows why. No one knows why.

She watches the night fall. Sits on the shore where the lake meets the river.
The whisper of current, a mournful loon calls, cooling mist brings a small shiver.
But nothing can bring one more moment. She whispers, “For now I must stay.”
Long after sundown, she goes to their bed. “I miss you. I’ll see you some day.”

And her whisper of love’s soft pledge from the waterside, rises up and away
It rises up and away… rises up and away. oooo oo oooo oo
